The fluted bench was designed in wood shop class, where the assignment was to build a furniture piece. The Ebb and Flow Chandelier was designed in lighting studio and submitted to the IES Boston Student Competition, where it won second place.

1 / Fluted Bench
Woodshop offered a hands-on approach to design; the fluted bench took inspiration from the cement fluted walls in UMass Dartmouth. The rounded edges of the planks softens the wood and creates a “pillow,” inviting everyone to take a seat.

Sand is a serene aspect of nature: it flows, molds, and travels in beautiful and seamless patterns. The peaks of sand dunes create wave-like lines as well as a sharp contrast between light and dark. The wave structure and illumination aspects of dunes directly inspired the chandelier and its qualities. This luminaire is made up of dune inspired shapes: one half of each shape is a thick wood veneer to reflect the natural aesthetics of sand, and the other half is frosted acrylic to soften the light. LED strips are attached to the inside of the veneer, and the light only comes out of the bottom and through the acrylic to emphasize the contrast between light and dark. The shapes intertwine in a flowy pattern to mimic the movement of dunes.
